PHOENIX — The resounding thwack of Carlos Gonzalez’s 421-foot home run that wasn’t may have produced the prettiest sound under the hot desert sky Tuesday night.
But it was the loud thud off the bat of Yasmany Tomas that left the Rockies heartbroken.
Tomas punctuated a career night with his first grand slam, a towering blast to right field that helped the Arizona Diamondbacks hand the Rockies a 12-9 loss.
The Rockies turned a 5-0 deficit into a 9-6 lead by scoring three runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. But Colorado could produce no answer on the mound for the last-place Diamondbacks, who entered Tuesday’s series opener on a six-game losing streak.
