Chi Chi Gonzalez’s strong September gives him real shot at Rockies rotation

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Alexander “Chi Chi” Gonzalez is the embodiment of spring training optimism.

A fling with success last September restored his confidence and caught the attention of the Rockies’ brass. Now the right-hander begins camp with an excellent chance to make the starting rotation. It’s a rotation — 5.87 ERA and only 46 quality starts last season — that could certainly use a feel-good shot in the arm.

In the haze of the Rockies’ 91-loss season, Gonzalez’s September might be easily forgotten, but not in the eyes of manager Bud Black.

“For him, and for us, it was important, to see what we saw,” Black said Wednesday as pitchers and catchers held their first official workouts.
