SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Alexander “Chi Chi” Gonzalez is the embodiment of spring training optimism.
A fling with success last September restored his confidence and caught the attention of the Rockies’ brass. Now the right-hander begins camp with an excellent chance to make the starting rotation. It’s a rotation — 5.87 ERA and only 46 quality starts last season — that could certainly use a feel-good shot in the arm.
In the haze of the Rockies’ 91-loss season, Gonzalez’s September might be easily forgotten, but not in the eyes of manager Bud Black.
