Chad Bettis needs chemotherapy after cancer spreads in Rockies pitcher

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Chad Bettis beamed with relief last month when doctors showed him some promising cancer test results. But the Rockies right-hander will now require chemotherapy after doctors found his cancer spread, he said Friday.

Bettis, 27, who won 14 games last year to lead the Rockies, is the oldest member of what sets up as a young and promising pitching rotation. But Bettis will now require several weeks of treatment for a new found of cancer.

Bettis said oncologists found, in a routine test, that his lymph nodes had swollen and a biopsy showed that cancer had spread.
