CHICAGO — Joe Maddon’s “Five Levels of Being a Professional” has become a staple with the Cubs as the skipper looks to pack the Wrigley Field home clubhouse with what he dubs “Level 5” guys.
A Level 1 player is “happy to be here.” Level 2 is “survival.” Level 3 is proving you belong, and Level 4 is making the most money you can.
Level 5?
“All I want to do is win.”
And that’s exactly the player the Cubs believe Carlos Gonzalez to be, as the outfielder signed a minor-league deal with Chicago last week and made his Cubs debut Monday.
