On November 17, 2023, the Colorado Rockies quietly made a trade with the Cleveland Guardians to acquire Cal Quantrill in exchange for Minor League catcher Kody Huff. If you’ll recall, Quantrill had been waived by the Guardians as a two-fold plan to cut costs (he was set to earn a little over $6 million in arbitration, the Rockies settled for $6.55 million this season) and move on from a player with some injury performance concerns. The trade, as it turns out, has been one of the best moves by Bill Schmidt for the 2024 season.
Cal Quantrill is a great trade chip, but only if the Rockies will allow it
