Veteran midfielder Dillon Powers has a new tactical role in the Rapids lineup

COMMERCE CITY — Over the course of his five seasons with the Rapids, Dillon Powers has played a variety of positions — attacking midfielder, defensive midfielder and even outside midfielder.

Now he has yet another role, that of a hybrid midfielder with clear defensive responsibilities, but is also critical in the attack.

When the other team has the ball, coach Pablo Mastroeni wants Powers to form a defensive line with holding midfielder Micheal Azira, but when the Rapids gain possession, he wants Powers going forward.

“If he stays back, we only have four options versus five,” Mastroeni said of Powers pressing on the attack.
