The Colorado Rapids’ annual Fourth of July match features 2015 MLS Cup Champions Portland Timbers this year.
Both teams enter the match after being eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup as the Rapids lost to FC Dallas 2-1 in Frisco and the Timbers fell to the LA Galaxy 1-0 at Providence Park.
Colorado still tops MLS while Portland sits at 5th place in the Western Conference standings. In their last respective league matches, Portland defeated the Houston Dynamo thanks to two late Diego Valeri penalties while Colorado had to settle for a hard-fought road point in a scoreless draw with LA.
