Rapids win season opener with a 1-0 verdict over New England

COMMERCE CITY — Dominique Badji scored on a header to finish off a free kick opportunity for the Rapids in the second half and the back line picked up where it left off last season to secure a 1-0 shutout in the team’s season opener Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Badji scored in the 52nd minute off a free kick taken by Dillon Powers. Striker Kevin Doyle headed Powers’ offering into the left post, Jared Watts kept the play alive and Badji finished it.

With an added emphasis on sending numbers into the box in hopes of scoring more goals, the Rapids managed some tantalizing chances in the first half, and their first one was their best.
