The Colorado Rapids’ USL affiliate Charlotte Independence were defeated Saturday by Wilmington Hammerheads 2-1 at Ramblewood Stadium.
Despite outshooting Wilmington 22-8 and having plenty of opportunities, the Independence were unable to capitalize. Wilmington shot stopper Eric Ati was the busier of the two keepers recording seven saves while Colorado Rapids’ loanee John Berner recorded one.
In second half stoppage time, Lewis Hilton scored the lone goal for Charlotte, his second in three games. “Obviously it was a big game for both teams in the league standings,” said Hilton. “Both teams needed to get three points and I think the intensity was quite high and it was quite a physical game.
