Dillon Powers gives Rapids a lead, but Colorado settles for 1-1 tie in D.C.

WASHINGTON — — The script was playing out exactly how the Colorado Rapids wanted. After announcing the signing of U.S. international goalkeeper Tim Howard earlier in the day, Colorado held a one-goal lead over D.C. United with 10 minutes left, threatening to spoil the home opener at RFK Stadium.

But with Howard in attendance, it was a goalkeeper error by Rapids goalie Zac MacMath that threw United a lifeline. Fabian Espindola, a second-half substitute, made the Rapids pay, leveling the score and sending Colorado into a bye week with a 1-1 draw.

The Rapids took the lead in the 69th minute on a headed goal by Dillon Powers off a corner kick from Marco Pappa.
