The Colorado Rapids have signed two of their centerbacks to new contracts, locking down Lalas Abubakar through 2024 with a club option for 2025 and Auston Trusty through 2023.
Abubakar, who joined the Rapids on loan from Columbus in 2019 (and was permanently signed prior to the 2020 season), has played a massive part in stabilizing a Rapids backline that had been leaky in past seasons. The 26-year-old scored his first goal for Colorado this year and was awarded the club’s Defensive Player of the Year Award in both of his seasons in Commerce City.
In the club press release on Tuesday, Rapids General Manager and Executive VP Padraig Smith commented, “We are delighted to secure Lalas’ future in Burgundy.
