COMMERCE CITY — The Rapids’ unbeaten streak of five meets an interesting opportunity Wednesday. Beginning U.S. Open Cup play midweek against United Soccer League-side New Mexico United, the Rapids can flaunt their depth and test their philosophy against a rising tier two club.
The Rapids will be without stars Tim Howard and Kei Kamara, leaving a lot of young homegrown players chances to step up. To boot, Deigo Rubio will look to gain full fitness, coming off an injury-plagued last few weeks.
On the other side, New Mexico United is in its inaugural season in the USL, and the club is off to a great with a 6-7-2 record, holding first place in the Western Conference.
