Ralphie IV, the retired live buffalo mascot of the University of Colorado, passed away on Sunday.
She served as CU's mascot from 1998-2008.
Ralphie IV, who was a month away from turning 20, developed an abnormal growth on her left side in the past week. It was determined that she was suffering from liver failure and in rapid decline.
"She was ready to go today," her caretaker, John Graves, said in a press release by CU. "It was very peaceful ... almost 20 is fairly old for a buffalo."
Donated to CU by media and sports entrepreneur Ted Turner in 1998, Ralphie IV was born in April of 1997 in Montana.
