GOLDEN – Colorado track and field sophomore Avery McMullen's jumped an inch farther than the current women's long jump record here Wednesday at the Kit Mayer Classic, but unfortunately had too strong of a wind at her back for the mark to count.
McMullen jumped a personal best 6.20 meters (20-4.5) on her fourth jump in competition with a 2.2 meters per second tailwind, then on her final jump blasted a 6.32 meter (20-9) mark with a 2.9 m/s tailwind, or just under six and a half mile per hour wind.
Unfortunately for McMullen her wind-aided marks will not count for the CU top-10, which she currently is fifth in, but with the mark behind her all she needs is a better day without wind to go after the record, seeking a wind-legal jump of 2.
