Late-cycle coaching hires rarely produce right fix. Will CU Buffs football buck trend?

Here’s some positive spin on Colorado’s search for its next head football coach: The Buffaloes don’t face competition from other programs to hire the best available candidate.

The ugly flipside: The pool of interested and available candidates is much smaller than soon after a season ends.

CU is a week removed from Mel Tucker bolting Boulder for greener pastures at Michigan State. It’s possible CU athletic director Rick George strikes gold on the hire, which is expected soon, and the Tucker saga does not ultimately scar CU, even without access to the December-January coaching pool that produced 20 new FBS coaches.
