While every eye in the stadium was mesmerized as Colorado quarterback Steven Montez turned the scoreboard into a laser light show, one play got lost in a pile of points the Buffaloes dumped on Colorado State during a 45-13 rout. That single pass, one of his shorter completions on Friday evening, was delivered with an artisan’s touch to the back shoulder of Juwann Winfree and revealed something we haven’t previously seen from Montez.
For the first time, he looked like an NFL quarterback.
I went to a football game and witnessed the butterfly effect. On opening night of his 2018 season, there was something distinctly different about Montez, and if the change sticks, it could change Colorado’s fortunes in the Pacific-12 Conference.
