CU suspends chancellor; AD, football coach ordered to make donations after handling of Joe Tumpkin case

Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano will serve a 10-day suspension and Colorado athletic director Rick George and football coach Mike MacIntyre are being ordered to make $100,000 donations benefiting domestic violence awareness for their “failures” in handling a case of alleged domestic violence involving former assistant football coach Joe Tumpkin, CU president Bruce Benson announced Monday.

DiStefano, George and MacIntyre also will be given letters of reprimand.

The announcements followed a meeting of the CU Board of Regents after an investigation into how officials responded to a claim of domestic violence by Tumpkin’s former girlfriend. The investigation concluded three “failures” by the university, according to former U.
