DENVER — The largest crowd to see a Rocky Mountain Showdown in nearly 15 years expected to see an offensive shootout.
It wound up being the Colorado defense in the starring role.
The new-look CU defense looked as stingy as the old one, and the Buffaloes' offense did just enough as the Buffs defeated rival Colorado State, 17-3, on Friday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
CU (1-0) opened its season with a victory for the second year in a row, while CSU dropped to 1-1 in front of the announced crowd of 73,932 - the largest for this game since 2003.
