CU Boulder marching band to feature solo baton twirler for first time in 20 years

For the first time in 20 years, the University of Colorado’s marching band has a feature baton twirler.

The Golden Buffalo Marching Band welcomed freshman Kaitlyn Turnbull to campus this fall and got right to work incorporating her into the band’s field show.

Turnbull and the band will be performing for CU’s first football game of the season Friday against Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver.

Matthew Roeder, the marching band’s director, said the last time CU had a feature baton twirler was in 1996. The band’s leaders phased out the feature twirler position because they wanted an entire section of twirlers and there wasn’t enough people interested in the discipline, Roeder said.
