BOULDER — The origin of Colorado’s brand of speed begins with the 310-pound man in the middle.

By the time the Buffs concluded spring practice in April, it was clear to senior center Alex Kelley that his role in CU’s high-tempo offense was going to require a new standard of summer conditioning.

“I lost a few more pounds than I played at last year,” said Kelley, who played at around 315 a season ago. “That really helps with tempo when you’re really in good shape. I’m the one who really dictates how fast we go on offense.
