BOULDER — Alex Kizirian eats six meals a day to maintain his strength and stamina for throwing the shot put, discus and hammer for the University of Colorado track team, and he has a special cook to keep the calories coming.
Kizirian lives with his 80-year-old maternal grandmother, Fidana Haralampieva, an immigrant from Bulgaria who speaks no English. His favorite dish: pulneni chushki, stuffed peppers with rice and spiced ground beef.
"She's very caring," said Kizirian, who moved to Colorado from Bulgaria with his mother when he was 6 years old. "She's very sweet. She likes to take care of me.
