Nine seconds after Edmonton tied the score at 2-all late in the first period, the Avalanche re-took the lead on defenseman Cale Makar’s goal that screamed past Oilers goalie Mike Smith high to the glove side.
Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft used his only challenge, believing the Avalanche were offside and the goal should not count. But on replay review, it showed that Makar didn’t touch the puck in the Oilers’ zone until after teammate Valeri Nichushkin left the zone.
Had Makar carried the puck over the blue line, it would have been offside. Because of the failed challenge, the Avalanche started the second period with 1:47 of power-play time.
