The #1 ranked University of Denver Pioneers were upended in their NCHC opener Friday night, falling to Western Michigan 6-5. WMU scored two goals in the final 1:12 in an uncharacteristic lapse for the Pioneers, who appeared to be well on their way to a win before being outscored 3-1 in the final period.
Denver (4-1-2, 0-1 NCHC) was outshot for just the second time all season 37-35. Freshman goalie Dayton Rasmussen started in net for DU in place of senior Tanner Jaillet and turned away 31 shots.
It looked early on like it would be the Henrik Borgström show, as he recorded a natural hat trick with two goals in the first period and another five minutes into the second.
