Sakic had a coherent plan. Sign up the “core” players, within a “structure,” and fill in around them. The problem now is that the core didn’t live up to that faith and the supporting cast was horrible. Yet the Avalanche has painted itself into a corner with those signings it’s defensible to give Sakic one more year and see to what extent the reboot of that plan works after cap space is cleared and signings and deals are made this summer.
