For the second time in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, the Colorado Avalanche have selected an NCAA bound player from the Maritimes. This time they chose Matthew Steinburg with the 63rd overall selection. This is the final pick the Avs received in the Matt Duchene deal.
This pick was a huge reach. Steinburg is a 6’1, right-shooting center who was ranked 133rd among North American skaters by NHL central scouting.
Committed to Cornell University next season, Steinburg was born in Nova Scotia but has spent the last two years at St. Andrew’s College in Toronto - the same prep school Alex Newhook played at.
