When Avalanche minor-league goalie Roman Will signed in May to return to his native Czech Republic, and then Colorado traded Reto Berra to Florida, it nudged Spencer Martin up the organizational depth chart in the net.
Martin, 21, seems destined to be the No. 1 goalie for the San Antonio Rampage at the outset of the season, and likely be first in line for a callup to Colorado if either Semyon Varlamov or Calvin Pickard is injured.
“I’m very confident in myself,” Martin said Monday. “If the opportunity came, I’d be ready.”
Martin was with the Avalanche for the rookie camp that concluded Monday, and included Rookie Showcase games against San Jose and Anaheim, and he will be back on the ice Friday when Colorado’s training camp opens at Family Sports Center.
