Semyon Varlamov out at least two weeks for Avalanche

Semyon Varlamov, the Avalanche’s top goaltender, will miss at least two weeks, Colorado coach Jared Bednar said, with what is apparently a lingering groin strain.

“He’s not ready,” Bednar said. “The goal was to get him back on the ice before the all-star break.”

The Avs on Thursday called up backup goaltender Andrew Hammond. He will back up now-No. 1 goaltender Jonathan Bernier. Bernier, who last week was voted the NHL’s second star, will start Saturday at Dallas against the Stars.

The Avs have not been specific about Varlamov’s injury, saying only that it’s a lower body muscular injury.
