NHL prepares for 100-year anniversary celebration

The NHL is approaching the biggest celebration in the league’s 99-year history. Beginning Jan. 1 in Toronto with the Centennial Classic outdoor game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, the NHL will have a smorgasbord of yearlong festivities to commemorate its 100-year anniversary.

“We couldn’t be more proud or thrilled to be celebrating 100 years of NHL hockey,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday from the Pepsi Center, before the Avalanche hosted the Arizona Coyotes. “For us to celebrate with all the people who have played this game and have built this game, and all the fans who have been part of the game — for a sport that really prides itself on its history and its traditions, we’re excited and thrilled to be celebrating 100 years.
