TORONTO —
In hindsight, the Avalanche's best offseason "move" wasn't the big trade with Buffalo in June or the handful of free-agent signings in July.
It was a move the Avs didn't make. They chose to not part ways with goalie Reto Berra in the June NHL buyout period.
Sticking with the Swiss goalie who was third string most of last season gave Colorado envious depth at the position and possible trade options to improve other areas of the team. Now it has given the Avs a first-string goalie.
Berra has complete command of the nets over Sem yon Varlamov, who is injured, and Calvin Pickard.
