Denver Sports Omelette: The clear-cut problem with the average Avalanche is goaltending

At the NHL All-Star event last weekend, Pekka Rinne, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner as the NHL’s best goaltender, shared his thoughts as to why league scoring is up and a goalie’s save percentage is down.

The shooters, Rinne told Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News, “are (bleeping) too good.”

Avalanche goalies Semyon Varlamov and Philipp Grubauer likely heard or read Rinne’s quote and probably shook their heads in agreement. Among goalies to have played 20 games, neither Varlamov or Grubauer are ranked among the top-20 in save percentage or goals-against average.
