The Colorado Avalanche front offices have made a lot of Avs fans happy this morning. They announced that they’ve bought out defenseman Francois Beauchemin’s contract.
I’m a little more philosophical about the situation. It’s not that I think Beachemin’s play warrants another year at $4.5 million, which is what he had left on his contract. He was truly dreadful last season, recording a -19 turnover ratio. He was also responsible for too many goals against the Avs than I care to tally.
Beauchemin is 37 years old now. He’s a restricted free agent. His buyout coupled with his age and last season’s performance almost certainly means he’ll be retiring.
