Colorado Avalanche GM Joe Sakic is still a relatively inexperienced NHL General Manager, and in some decisions over his tenure, it has certainly shown.
From the trade for Reto Berra to the extension for Brad Stuart to last year’s frankly wasteful trade deadline rental of Mikkel Boedker, some of Super Joe’s choices have left us all scratching our heads.
But this offseason, we saw Joe make some smart, quiet choices in restocking the Avalanche prospect pool while gaining depth with short-term, reasonable contracts. While he initially threatened moving a major piece to acquire top-pairing defense, he decided not to over-pay like the Edmonton Oilers, and instead put his trust in Colorado’s pipeline of budding defensive prospects.
