In 463 previous career NHL games, Carl Soderberg had never scored a goal in a shootout, and he had only made four attempts before Wednesday.
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar nevertheless tapped the 33-year-old Swede on the shoulder to take Colorado’s sixth shootout attempt against the Vancouver Canucks at the Pepsi Center.
Soderberg didn’t disappoint, beating goalie Jacob Markstrom for a 3-2 victory that improved the Avalanche’s league-worst record of 2-12 when games go beyond regulation.

After Colorado collected points in its sixth consecutive game and 10th in the last 12, Bednar said he wasn’t aware Soderberg had never scored a shootout goal.
