The Pepsi Center’s name change to Ball Arena is a good move for Denver hockey.
John Hayes, the chairman, president and chief executive officer of Broomfield-based Ball Corporation, is a hockey guy. He plays adult-league hockey and was the proud owner of the Denver Cutthroats, the Central Hockey League affiliate of the Avalanche for two seasons from 2012 to 2014.
The Cutthroats were cool. Named after Colorado’s state fish, the team offered an entertaining product at Denver Coliseum and deserved a better fate than going dormant in 2014 when the CHL folded.
The Cutthroats’ logo was a green fish with a red-stripped jawline (cutthroat) swimming through a “D” — a brilliant and original indigenous design for a Denver hockey team.
