The self-inflicted heat was on Jim Montgomery on Friday when the Dallas Stars played the Avalanche at the Pepsi Center. Montgomery, the Stars’ second-year coach who formerly was the highly successful bench boss at the University of Denver, was hoping his NHL team would get off to a hot start like the Avalanche.
“They’ve been unreal. It doesn’t matter where they play — East Coast, West Coast or at home,” Montgomery said of the Avs. “I think they’re the fastest team in the league and I think they have depth and I think Jared Bednar and his staff are doing a great job of getting these guys to be on top of their game.
