Avs break tradition, draft college-bound players Cameron Morrison, Nathan Clurman

The Avalanche will be keeping a close watch on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the upcoming season.

That was apparent after Colorado took two Notre Dame freshmen-to-be — left wing Cameron Morrison in the second round and Boulder-born defenseman Nathan Clurman in the sixth round — on the second day of the NHL draft in Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday.

"Our development guys are liking me because now they can go catch two players at once," Avalanche director of amateur scouting Alan Hepple said after the final selections Saturday.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pound Morrison, from Aurora, Ontario, had 34 goals and 66 points for the United States Hockey League's Youngstown Phantoms last season.
