Avalanche’s Cale Makar has “bittersweet” amateur memories from Buffalo’s NHL arena

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In his first NHL experience at KeyBank Center, Cale Makar felt like a seasoned pro inside the visiting hockey locker room Tuesday.

The Avalanche rookie defenseman had utilized that very room for three previous high-level games, including two at the 2019 NCAA Frozen Four where Makar’s UMass Minutemen went 1-1, defeating Denver in overtime before getting shut out by Minnesota-Duluth in the national championship game.

About 15 months earlier, Makar helped Team Canada win the 2018 World Junior Championship at KeyBank Center, dressing in the same visiting NHL locker room.

“Lots of bittersweet memories here, that’s for sure,” Makar said after the Avs’ optional morning skate.
