The Avalanche announced Thursday it has traded backup goaltender Reto Berra to Florida for forward Rocco Grimaldi.
The Avs acquired Berra, 29, in 2014 from Calgary to back up starter Semyon Varlamov. However, with the emergence of Calvin Pickard midway through last season, Berra’s role with the team became tenuous. He finished the season with the Avs’ AHL affiliate in San Antonio.
In three seasons with Colorado, Berra compiled a 10-13-2 record in 34 appearances with a 2.69 goals-against average and a 91.5 percent save percentage.
Grimaldi, 23, was the Panthers’ second-round pick in the 2011 NHL draft.
