Avalanche GM Joe Sakic says “flexibility” was behind John Mitchell move

Avalanche center John Mitchell played in Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Wild after going to bed Friday unsure if he would remain with the team. Mitchell, who was pointless in four games following Thursday’s 4-0 loss at Chicago, was placed on waivers Friday and he cleared at 10 a.m. MT Saturday.

During Saturday’s matinee — after Mitchell played a team-low four shifts in the first period at the Pepsi Center — Avs general manager Joe Sakic said this about Mitchell: “I wasn’t necessary expecting him to get picked up. It’s a flexibility thing going forward.”

The Avs are paying approximately $72.
