BROOKLYN, N.Y. — If the Avalanche had beaten the Islanders on Sunday night at the Barclays Center, the New York tabloids might have had fodder for a screaming back page headline. Maybe something like:
SHAME ON YOU,
ISLANDERS
But the Islanders avoided being swept by the lowly Avalanche this season, beating Colorado 5-1 in the Barclays Center.
Ryan Strome’s goal on a 5-on-3 power play at 14:46 of the second period broke a 1-1 tie and the Islanders went on to the win, with backup goalie Jean-Francois Berube making 26 saves for New York.
Joe Colborne, who hadn’t scored since his opening-night hat trick against Dallas, had the only Colorado goal, staking the Avalanche to a 1-0 lead before the Islanders rallied on the scores from (in order) Nick Leddy, Strome, two from Anders Lee and, finally, Jason Chimera.
