Defenseman Sean Behrens is an incoming freshman at the University of Denver and his development will be overseen by the Avalanche, which obtained his NHL rights on Saturday.
The Avs selected Behrens with their second-round pick (61st overall) of the NHL draft — a pick they obtained from New Jersey last week as part of the trade of defenseman Ryan Graves to the Devils.
Behrens is the fourth DU player to be drafted by the Avalanche since the franchise relocated in Denver in 1995. The club selected forward J.D. Corbin of Littleton in 2004 (eighth round), forward Paul Stastny in 2005 (second) and defenseman Will Butcher in 2013 (fifth).
