TORONTO — The NHL's worst defensive team, coming off an unsightly 10-1 loss the previous night in Montreal, nearly pitched a shutout Sunday in Toronto.
Forwards Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon scored power-play goals and goalie Semyon Varlamov was close to perfect while making 51 saves in the Avalanche's 3-1 triumph over the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre.
"You guys don't know what I went through last night after the game," said Varlamov, who allowed six goals on 16 shots in relief duty at Montreal.
