Malcolm Williams had perhaps the best game by a receiver in Coastal Carolina history Saturday night at Louisiana-Monroe, and his effort was nearly enough to give CCU a win in its first game in the Sun Belt Conference.
The Chanticleers cut a 15-point deficit to two points with 3:07 remaining, but UL-Monroe was able to nearly run out the clock and scored a touchdown with a fumble return on the game’s final play to hold on for a 51-43 win at Malone Stadium.
Williams, who is from Shreveport, La., and was playing close to his family home, caught nine passes for a CCU-record 266 yards and two touchdowns.
