As the lone offensive star at the position, Gary Sánchez should be and will be the starting catcher for the American League All-Star team when they take the field in Cleveland on July 9.
Outside of Sánchez, the field for the backup spot is thin. This is no surprise, as the position has yielded plenty of players seemingly miscast among the rest of the game’s best. John Buck, Johnny Estrada, Miguel Montero, Dioner Navarro and Dan Wilson all lay claim to the title “MLB All-Star catcher.”
The quartet qualify as baseball cards one could pull out of a shoebox, laugh at a vague memory, and toss back into the box.
