CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland pitcher Herb Score threw more than 850 innings over eight seasons. After his playing days, he called thousands of Indians games as a broadcaster. But he's most remembered for one pitch 60 years ago.
On May 7, 1957, Score reared back and fired a 2-2 fastball to the Yankees' Gil McDougald at Municipal Stadium. It was only his 12th pitch of the game. McDougald's shot slammed back at Score in what is remembered as one of baseball's most notorious injuries.
It was a night game, with Cleveland temperatures that week reaching into the high 70s before dipping to the 30s and 40s at night.
