Oscar Mercado is coming back to Cleveland.
With Greg Allen being shipped to San Diego along with Mike Clevinger, the Indians have opted to bring back Mercado to share center field duties with Delino DeShields. Yu Chang has been optioned to Lake County to make room for Mercado.
Mercado entered the season as the Cleveland Indians’ starting center fielder but struggled at the plate through the first 22 games, slashing .111/.167/.111 and posting a -26 wRC+. This was after a rookie season in which he recorded a .269/.318/.443 slash line and contributed 95 wRC+ to the Tribe lineup, usurping Leonys Martin’s spot in center.
