GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Manager Terry Francona wondered what the reaction would be among Indians' outfielders who have been in camp since mid-February when Marlon Byrd walked into the clubhouse Friday morning after signing a minor league deal with 15 exhibition games left before opening day.
Francona was referring to the anxiety level rising among guys competing for jobs. What he might not have anticipated was the grand slam that Joey Butler hit high off the batter's eye in center field in the fifth inning of the Tribe's 10-8 Cactus League victory over Oakland at Goodyear Ballpark.
