CLEVELAND: Larry Doby now has a permanent place at Progressive Field.
At what the Indians call their “new front door,” the right-field gate, the organization unveiled a statue in honor of Doby, joining those in honor of Bob Feller and Jim Thome.
Doby was the first African-American player to play in the American League, doing so less than three months after Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier in the National League. Doby played for the Indians from 1947-1955 and again in 1959, becoming the first African-American player to win a World Series title in 1948 and earning All-Star honors seven times.
