The Indians on Saturday officially purchased the contract of Bruce Chen and called him up from Triple-A Columbus. He'll start Saturday against the Minnesota Twins.
That part had been known for a few days. It wasn't known who would be the odd man out on the 40-man roster. That turned out to be relief pitcher Anthony Swarzak, who was designated for assignment. He was acting as the eighth man in the bullpen.
Swarzak had a 3.38 ERA in 13 1/3 innings pitched this season.
Chen, 37, had a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings pitched with Triple-A Columbus this season.
