CLEVELAND: It was almost the most exciting play in baseball. It still brought the crowd to its feet, but it won’t look the same in the box score.
In the third inning of Tuesday’s 6-0 win against the Tampa Bay Rays, Jason Kipnis lined a ball to center field with Yan Gomes on second base. The ball took an odd, high bounce when it hit the ground, went off Rays center fielder Desmond Jennings’ glove and rolled all the way to the wall.
Kipnis ran to first at about “80 percent” knowing he had a single. When it got past Jennings, Kipnis went all out, eventually rounding third and sliding head-first into home.
